OTTO AUREK STEFAN
Joost, 20, lives in Amsterdam and is attending the Amsterdam University of the Arts. He is studying to become an audio editor and would like to produce music one day. Music has been a big part in Joost's life, he grew up playing the piano and had dreams of becoming a professional pianist.
Joost has a warm personality and brightens the room when he walks in. He stays on top of the latest trends, believing that dressing and presenting oneself well has a major impact on mood and positivity.
I drew inspiration from music and the influence different genres have on they way people move to them. I looked to sound waves for structure, and similar structures manifested in nature. I also found inspiration in artists' interpretations of music into painting.
Working at KEEN, I had the opportunity to model and print this design as a skill-building exercise and proof of concept.
The design focuses on elevating the foot of of the ground, much like sound waves can be used to elevate objects. The toe and heel are purposely very different, symbolizing the fluidity and breaks that are present in music. Out of all of the global submissions, my design was selected to be in the top 64 of the competition, the design advanced to the top 32, but failed to progress into the top 16.
I wanted to capture Joost's warm personality with the color palette. The palette captures a range of emotion from bright and light-hearted to darker and contemplative. This translates to a dichotomy between fast and upbeat music and a slower, softened genre such as soul.
Modern millenial consumers are more environmentally conscious than their predecessors. Therefore, Ariaprene, Plusfoam, and Pinatex are the major materials utilized. Each is recyclable and reduces the product footprint.
The World Sneaker Championship is a footwear design contest held by Pensole and Foot Locker once a year. The contest is open to submissions worldwide, each design competing in a head-to-head March Madness-style tournament. Held online, the public votes for their favorite designs, determining who advances to the next round. Each designer is competing for $20,000 and the opportunity to have their design developed and sold in a limited run at Foot Locker.
